JJP Changes to Pirates

Jersey Jack Pinball announced two changes this week to their upcoming pinball machine, Pirates of the Caribbean.  You can view a video of the announcement here.  The first change was to the chest mechanism.  “The lid of the chest is now going to stay open at all times.  This used to open and close with the diverter mechanism underneath the chest that kicked the balls up into the chest.  That was causing a couple issues at different shows, and now with it stationary, this is a much better shot.  The ball shoots into there and doesn’t kick back out and is much more reliable.”

The second, and more notable change, was to the triple spinning disc mechanism.  “We decided to change it to a single spinning disc physically in the playfield.  It is a much more reliable mechanism, it runs a lot quieter, and it is an established mech that has been used for years in pinball…we’re still doing the random generated award, we still have the plundering so you can steal from other people that you’re playing against, jackpots, random award multipliers, etc.  The playfield art itself has been brought in slightly…”

For a bit of background, here are the original three circles in action that are being replaced by a single spinning disc.

In the Pirates of the Caribbeans movies, this map is known as the Mao Run Map.  To see what it looks like in the movies, you can watch this short video montage (about 1:40).

Here is the underside of the mech:

As expected, the reaction to these changes were mostly negative from pinball buyers.  There is undoubtedly frustration and disappointment from the Jersey Jack Pinball side as well.  Many buyers are saying they are planning to back out because of these changes.  Many are proposing their own ideas of different ways of changing the disc to make it more aesthetically appealing and possibly keep some of the features of the original discs.  See here for one example.

There are many unanswered questions surrounding these changes as well.

  • Did coding the discs and rewards play into the decision at all?
  • Will the new disc spin in both directions or at different speeds?
  • Will there be any changes in pricing or any additional features elsewhere?
  • Is the artwork on the new disc finalized?
  • Is it still possible to change the look of the new disc?
  • Will the late changes cause any delays in shipping?
  • When can we expect these machines to start shipping?

TWIP reached out to both Jack Guarnieri and Eric Meunier with these questions.  It is possible that Eric Meunier will be on Kaneda’s Pinball Podcast on Monday.  Jersey Jack Pinball is also planning to stream on Wednesday, which will be another opportunity to get your questions answered.

Just as a reminder, this game is still packed:

  • 22 characters to choose from
  • Over 100 modes/chapters
  • A Black Pearl pirate ship
  • Aim-able cannon ball shot at target ship
  • 4.3 inch apron display
  • 13 unique shots on the playfield
  • 6 diverters
  • 17 ball paths
  • 2 outlane skill saves
  • 5 flippers
  • 27 targets
  • 2 magnets (one in the orbit, one on the Start Chapter area)
  • 3 RGB edge lit spinners
  • 5 entrance subway
  • An under-the-flipper shot
  • 5 mini-wizard modes
  • 1 ultimate wizard mode

That being said, the concentric spinning map discs were a very cool interactive feature that looked great and people are understandably disappointed with this change.

JJP has shown in the past they listen to the pinball community.  TWIP Prediction: this will not be what we see in the final game that ships.  Stay tuned, we should find out more about this in the coming weeks.

Christopher Franchi – Interview with Head2Head and Facebook Post

Our friends Martin and Ryan C. from the Head 2 Head Pinball Podcast (website, Facebook) interviewed Christopher Franchi, who did the artwork for both Batman ’66 and Guardians of the Galaxy.  Listen to the full podcast here!  Here are just a few of the highlights:

Head2Head: After Batman, Stern was pretty happy with your work because they contracted you for three more games, is that right?

Christopher Franchi: “…in total yes, but not at one time.  As soon as I finished Batman I was given Guardians.  That took me all the way through to next Expo in October of 2017.  And it was revealed shortly after that.  And as soon as that was revealed, I got two more which are both – I know one for sure, but I believe both are Ka-Pow titles.  I don’t know how they’re going to be released, one Ka-Pow and one Stern or if they’re both going to be Ka-Pow.  I don’t know.  And those were given to me, both at the same time more or less.  One I started working on sooner because it was more of a – we were putting together a song and dance for the licensor for the license.  But when the second one came along, the license was already secure and ready to go.”

H2H: Does Joe Kaminkow have any input into these pinball machines, or is he more of the big guy that gets the licenses that are impossible to get?

CF: “Joe has a lot of input.  He wants to be part of the process every step of the way.  Like I said, I’m working on the playfield for one of them and I’m about to start the playfield for the second one.  For that one, I’m basically sending him daily progress.  Here’s what I’ve done, I’ve added this I’ve added that…He’s very easy to work with, he’s not demanding…He’s been in the industry for a long and worked in pinball for a long time, and definitely everything he has to offer is something valuable that you need to listen to.  Everything that he’s done so far, all the suggestions he’s made has been great.  There is this one in particular – it just drives nuts that I can’t talk about what this stuff is (laughs) – there is one in particular that I’m doing the playfield right now that is just going to blow people’s minds and I can’t tell you why!”

CF (talking about dream themes he’d like to do): “I can die now that I did Batman, but there are others I’d like to do…

H2H: Jaws?

CF: “Jaws is at the top of the list, however, in my experience in doing some licensed Jaws t-shirts, and the rule was you cannot use Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, or Richard Dreyfuss.  I don’t know if they’re just not part of the licensing deal?  So my thought is – if you have to do a Jaws pinball machine and you can’t do those characters, it’s not worth doing.  The shark is so secondary in that story really, I mean it is the major villain but it is the story of these three guys that are so different that come together…they are really the story in the movie, and the shark just happens to swim by and eat somebody once in a while.”

Also interestingly, on Christopher Franchi’s Facebook page last week, he posted this picture of Munsters model kits from Moebius that contained his artwork.  Does it mean anything?  Maybe, maybe not, but worth noting with Munsters being one of the rumored titles that may be upcoming…

Last week we got an update from the upcoming New York City Championships, which take place May 18th-20th:

(New York, NY) –  Never Beef Productions (NBP) is proud to announce that the Professional and Amateur Pinball Association (PAPA), which is part of the nonprofit Replay Foundation, the organization behind ReplayFX, the pinball and gaming convention which hosts the world’s largest pinball tournament, is joining the New York City Pinball Championships (NYCPC) team as a sponsor. The partnership means that PAPA will be bringing its professional eSports streaming rig and streaming production team to the event, ensuring that first-class audio and video coverage of the championships will be available for pinball tournament viewers across the globe.

MATCH! – Next Game…What is Coming Up on This Week in Pinball

  • As we mention above, we have a Deep Dive into Iron Maiden scheduled for Thursday!
  • So…next week.  There is a chance there will NOT be a Monday post on This Week in Pinball next Monday due to some other time commitments.  Hopefully we’ll be able to do one (possibly a shorter version), but it will be up in the air.  I would really like to not miss my first Monday so we’ll do our best, but no promises!
