Just over a week after the last major Sega arcade news about the imminent return of House of the Dead, we have another announcement from them featuring one of their biggest names. Revealed by them today in a special livestream for the game, their recent blue hedgehog kart racer Sonic Racing CrossWorlds is now receiving a deluxe arcade edition. Let’s take a look at what is known about it currently:
Sonic Racing CrossWorlds Arcade DX
First off, in case you know little about Sonic Racing CrossWorlds, here’s a small refresher. This game originally released last September for most home platforms, and is the latest kart racer title for the fastest thing alive. As well as the basic old Sonic Drift games for the Game Gear, previous instances of these were done in the 2010s by OutRun 2 home porters Sumo Digital, who developed two crossover kart racers with other all-star Sega characters (the first of which received an arcade edition, released by Sega Amusements back in 2011), and one that was purely Sonic and friends.
One of the first things revealed about the game was that it was a collaboration between Sonic Team and numerous arcade developers at Sega who are now part of the same division together, including those that make the Initial D arcade games. This fact and them intentionally basing some of the core gameplay mechanics on Sega arcade racing classics did make some fans think that the game would additionally be a perfect fit for what is effectively its ancestral home. As it turns out, that wish has now been granted with this:
Sonic Racing CrossWorlds Arcade DX, as it is known, was revealed by Sega today as part of Club Chaos, a special livestream which has included other announcements for the game, its live world championships, and more Sonic-related happenings, as the franchise is currently celebrating its 35th anniversary. Nothing has been detailed about it besides the above promotional graphic, but some things can be gleaned from that alone (although it does note that what is shown off is a work in process, so potentially expect changes whenever we see it in person).
Note that I did reach out to Sega Amusements about this, but by the time it hit the wires, their weekend had already started (they are based out of the UK; their US representative is also on vacation until next week).
What We Know About The Arcade Version
With this, Sega are now presenting the game in a vertical screen format. This appears to be an 85″ screen set on its side; from the render, I feel the control base is a little too close, but that could see some adjusting in the production model. That format has been all the rage with arcade racers of late, from Storm Racer 2 to Asphalt 9 Legends Arcade DX Plus and more; a vertical version of the game was in fact promoted by Sega recently (which funnily enough had one or two people wondering out loud whether an arcade release was imminent…).
Also in-keeping with those, the cabinet uses a motion base, but where it differs slightly is its specialized yoke-like steering wheel, which is likely there to accommodate the flying sections of the game’s races. Some arcade racers have done something similar to this in years gone by; Sega’s own F-Zero AX had a controller reminiscent of it back in the day.
Specifics on the game’s content and what changes there may be beyond the portrait screen are of course not out there just yet. It would be nice if there was some arcade-exclusive content, but so much is already rolling out for it in the home (including a very cool looking “Segaland” course, featuring cameos by numerous older Sega titles and arcade cabinets alike) that it would be a little surprising if that was the case. Most if not all of the licensed property DLC for the game (featuring Spongebob, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and others) would drive up the price too, so that probably won’t be making it over. Perhaps there will be one or two special arcade additions for to make up for this though.
Overall, between this and Jersey Jack’s recent pinball release (plus a card and coin pusher seen on test recently), it’s awesome to see Sonic getting some arcade love for the first time in a little while. Could we be playing it at IAAPA 2026, alongside House of the Dead Reawakened? It’s unclear right now, but if it does show up there, it would make for a great one-two punch from Sega. Either way, the arcade kart racer market is certainly heating up thanks to this, Disney Speedstorm Arcade, and Nickelodeon Kart Racers Arcade. The floor is now Nintendo and Bandai Namco’s to make a new Mario Kart Arcade GP
As soon as we hear more about Sonic Racing CrossWorlds Arcade DX, we will be sure to give you the details; once again, we have reached out to Sega Amusements for comment, but have not heard back from them as yet. For now, what do you think of this new title from Sega?
