Halloween is coming up fast, and to celebrate, Sega Amusements has pulled back the curtain on their next signature arcade release, House of the Dead Reawakened. This is the first VR entry into the series, celebrating thirty years of House of the Dead in arcades. It will be at IAAPA 2026 in a few weeks, where I will get a chance to play and film it. Let’s raise the dead and get blasting…

House of the Dead Reawakened – The Cabinet

Starting things off with our first full look at the cabinet, from the initial tease, we could tell that VR was a part of the mix, but it was unclear how the cabinet was setup. Now, we see that it takes inspiration from Sega’s VR Agent and 3MindWave’s Aegis Unbound, featuring an elaborate façade that looks like it’s a part of the signature House of the Dead that you’re exploring. This definitely will draw attention in any venue:

For the stats:

  • Theme park-styled gothic manor cabinet with animated lighting, a working clock tower, and a jump-scare reveal
  • 85” Attract screen (center), dual 43” player viewing screens (for spectators) that creates “a chilling depth effect that’s never been pulled off this convincingly”.
  • 2.1-channel audio per player with genuine bass
  • Custom light-gun controllers with haptic feedback & integrated DPVR E4C headsets with magnetic autocalibration
  • Custom-designed, stainless steel-armored VR headset cable harness, load-tested to 286lbs (130kg), so operators can buy with confidence and is backed by a 12-month warranty.

The last bullet point is especially pleasing to hear for operators; one of the biggest faults of VR arcade games have been the cables – you need to keep VR headsets and/or guns attached to the cabinet, but all of the yanking around tends to damage the cable fast, becoming a pressure point for frequent replacement (I’ve heard reports of some systems where the cables barely last 90 days). From the sounds of it, Sega’s designed this one to outlast their competitors, and the 12 month warranty is extra nice. Here’s what that looks like up close:

Dimension wise, this is 110″ tall, 106″ wide, but only 57″ deep. Here’s the new trailer showing it off:

The Game

Built in Unreal Engine 5, this appears to be a direct successor to House of the Dead Scarlet Dawn that was released back in 2018 (and used UE4). Per Sega, “Players use a range of weapons to mow down hordes of creatures across three missions, in solo or co-op mode”.

House of the Dead Reawakened by Sega Amusements

From the press release we were sent, it states:

House of the Dead has been in arcades since 1997. There have been five amusement titles, plus spin-off movies and console games, and the series has a global following among hardcore horror fans and casual players alike. There have been five amusement titles, plus spin-off movies and console games, and the series has a global following among horror fans and casual players alike.

“We’re proud to bring this quintessential horror game back to arcades in our most impressive build to date, all under one simple promise: ‘Dare to Experience’,” says Siraj Elkhawad, CEO of SEGA Amusements International. “With the franchise’s 30th anniversary just around the corner, this means a great deal to us. The House of the Dead brand has defined horror gaming for a generation, and reawakening it like this, for the very first time, felt like the only way to do that legacy justice.”

Stay tuned to our IAAPA 2026 coverage here on Arcade Heroes for more; that event starts on November 17th, and I’ll be there to check it out. There will be photos and videos posted to our social media as soon as possible, although this won’t be the only horror/zombie themed game to watch out for.

It isn’t clear just yet what the pricing or release date will be, but those will be something I’ll ask about at the show. I would expect 2027 for the latter though (hopefully during the first few months).

What are your thoughts on the return of Sega’s staple zombie shooter? And what do you think about the VR angle of House of the Dead Reawakened?
